The adsorbing property of alum and their ability to reduce the activity of sebaceous and sweat glands allow them to be used as an antiperspirant. The product is also used to prevent skin irritation, healing of small cuts, for example, as an aftershave. At the site of application, alum forms albuminate, a colloidal film that protects nerve endings. This reduces soreness, burning, itching, tension after insect bites.
